March 2008: PUPPET LAB - BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

In early March 2008, the Arts Council brought the innovative Puppet Lab to The Studio Theatre with their exciting production of Beauty and the Beast. Ten performances were enjoyed by pupils from the Island's schools. This was an original take on the classic fairytale; the performers combined beautifully handcrafted traditional marionettes for live puppetry, with modern technology for on-screen animation. Linking visual narrative and video storytelling this new style of string puppetry was a fascinating mix of old and new mediums working together to produce a sensory feast, while enthralling and inspiring both children and adults.

March 2008: MUSIC ACROSS THE SEA..... Dances in Time of Celebration!

THE MANX YOUTH ORCHESTRA & THE LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC YOUTH ORCHESTRA

An exchange trip during March 2008 saw two very special concerts performed together by the Manx Youth Orchestra and the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. These concerts, at both the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool on 2nd March and Villa Marina, Douglas on 16th March, were arranged especially to celebrate the links between the Isle of Man and Liverpool during Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture.

Barry Russell, composer, worked with local community groups on the Isle of Man (the IOM Women's Institute) and in Liverpool to devise a unique piece of music, Dances in Time of Celebration, especially for the occasion. Follow this link to see Isle of Man Newspapers' film of one of Barry's rehearsals with the WI.

Barry has worked with the Arts Council twice previously, with the composition of "Like the Wind" played by an all-Island ensemble at the 2007 Peel Bay Festival. He also worked extensively around the Island during the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra's 2006 Residency, when he conducted his Supermarket Symphony at Shoprite in Ramsey and performed his self-penned Pub Operas at The Haven in Port Erin.

January 2008 - CLAIRE MOORE: FREE MASTERCLASS "SONGS FROM THE SHOWS"

In January 2008, West End actress Claire Moore came to the Isle of Man to work with young singers.

Claire’s West End credits include Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Christine in Phantom of the Opera, Ellen in Miss Saigon, Fantine in Les Miserables, Nancy in Oliver and most recently Madame Thenardier in Les Miserables.

This was Claire’s third visit to the Island to work with local talent but this time she concentrated on working with young people. Eleven teenagers took part in workshops at the Erin Arts Centre, overcoming nerves and working really hard with Claire’s advice and support. In the evening a recital was held when the participants could showcase the work they had done during the day. Claire also performed at the recital and blew everyone away with her renditions of Think of Me and Memory to name just two. The participants also sang with Claire, providing backing harmonies for Your Raise Me Up and Climb Every Mountain. All who took part enjoyed the day enormously and learnt a great deal from Claire’s talent and experience as well as her patience and support.
