OSCAR WILDE'S "THE FISHERMAN & HIS SOUL" September 2006
A Found Theatre production, adapted and directed by Simon Corble.
A powerful and enigmatic tale from a master storyteller, brought to life through muscular performance, live atmospheric soundscapes and Wilde's intensely rich language. A young fisherman falls for a mermaid, but in order to join her in the depths of the sea he has to lose his immortal soul. He sets off to learn the secret ritual he must perform to free his soul from his body, but is surprised to discover that his soul has something to say in the matter. The struggle between himself, his soul, a jealous young witch and a troubled priest is at turns fascinating, tragic and moving.
As part of the rehearsal process the cast of four spent two weeks on a remote Greek island in some wild and atmospheric locations; these experiences were distilled into a performance that proved to be a dramatic feast.

BBC Philharmonic Orchestra July 2006
In July, the world renowned BBC Philharmonic Orchestra undertook a number of projects on the Island drawing on every aspect of their considerable expertise. An ensemble of musicians was resident on the Island from Sunday 2nd July to Sunday 9th July and the rest of the orchestra arrived on 8th July to undertake two major concerts, both of which were recorded by BBC Radio 3.
COMPOSITION WORKSHOPS AND MASTERCLASS
Composer Barry Russell worked with Manx Music Students, guiding them in composing music that was then performed by the BBC Ensemble.
MANX YOUTH ORCHESTRA COACHING AND PERFORMANCES
The BBC Ensemble of eight musicians coached members of the Manx Youth Orchestra who then performed with the Ensemble before audiences of schoolchildren at Castle Rushen High School and St Ninian’s High School.
WHO KILLED RAMONA RHAPSODY PERFORMANCES IN SCHOOL
Aimed at 9-12 year olds this was a musical/theatre workshop that took the familiar ‘whodunnit’ formulae and created a fun-filled and engaging musical experience. The mystery took place onboard a luxury ocean liner called the Pearl Fisher and the BBC Ensemble and an actor took the children on a musical journey during which they discover who killed Ramona Rhapsody.
SUPERMARKET SYMPHONY – TYNWALD DAY IN RAMSEY
Composer, Barry Russell, took workshops with a group of Shoprite Supermarket staff and their children. The group went on to perform with the BBC Ensemble at the supermarket on Tynwald Day playing a variety of unusual instruments - from cardboard boxes to carrier bags!
STRAND SHOPPING CENTRE and other unusual venues
A trio from the Ensemble performed at the Strand Shopping Centre on Tynwald Day, a cello duo performed at Nobles Hospital and another ensemble performed at Douglas Railway Station and The Hospice.
CENTENARY CENTRE, PEEL
A Jazz group drawn from the Ensemble with guest artist Alan Barnes performed at the Centenary Centre in Peel.
PUB OPERAS
Two pub operas written by composer Barry Russell were performed at The Haven pub in Port Erin; each only 12 minutes long, they are great fun and just a little bit bawdy!
CARMINA BURANA
Conductor Tecwyn Evans worked over a period of months with singers from many of the Island’s choirs who had come together in a massed choir to sing Carmina Burana with the Orchestra at the major concert on the Sunday. Rehearsals for this started in the autumn of 2005. This was a major community project which offered our singers a wonderful opportunity to sing this dramatic choral work with a world class orchestra and conductor.
