The Department of Transport is responsible for maintaining and developing much of the Island’s key infrastructure including, the highways network, drainage and sewerage systems, harbours and port facilities and the Island’s key gateway buildings such as the Sea Terminal and Airport. Through its Works Division, the Department provides a direct labour organisation which carries out essential works to the Island infrastructure and also maintains a highly effective 24 hour a day emergency response capability for the Island.

The Department is committed to providing high quality service to the people of the Island and is continually looking for ways to improve this service through key schemes such as the Runway Scheme, IRIS, and the new airport control tower.

The Department also provides search and rescue services through the Coastguard and Marine Operations and is also responsible for promoting and developing road safety awareness through education, publicity campaigns and engineering solutions.
